So recently I have been busy "back-to-work" shopping. It's the grown-up version of back-to-school shopping. Am I the only one who has to buy a new closet full of clothes so that I will be excited to go back to work? If anything will make me excited to wake up and go to work, its the thrill of getting to put on a new outfit. Pathetic, I know.
I seriously haven't shopped in over a year. I stopped buying clothes when we were trying to get pregnant, because I thought I wouldn't get to wear them for long. Then when I finally did get pregnant, you know how it goes... ugly maternity cotton wrap dresses were all that I wore! I was so schlumpy for 9 months, and gosh darnnit, I'm ready to feel like myself again! I knew it would be bad news for our pocketbook when I finally had my first post-pregnancy shopping trip!
In order to ensure that I buy pieces that I really need in my wardrobe, I've been taking inventory of what I already have in my closet. I organized my entire closet by color. Basically, there is a huge section of cream tops and a huge section of black tops...and not much in between. When did I stop buying colors and prints?
Case-in-point...see below.
Obviously I made myself a rule. No more solid cream/tan/black tops. Focus on trying to find colorful prints.
Next, I perused through some images online to get inspired for my big shopping trip, and I decided that if I had to sum up my current style in three people, it would be...
1) Tory Burch
She dresses so classic, and always adds fun statement necklaces to complete her look. I think she's beautiful.
2) Kelly Ripa
I think she dresses very lady-like, which I love. Very elegant, but also fun with lots of bright colors. I DVR Regis and Kelly every morning, and I pretty much like what she wears every single day.
3) Lily Van Der Woodsen
Ok, I know. She's a terrible mom on Gossip Girl, but I just love her style. She wears the classy low bun like no one else. She's so sophisticated. (For the record, I have totally given up on Gossip Girl. It took me a few years to realize how DUMB this show is. Those kids are now adults and are still scheming tricks to declare "war" on eachother. Stupid.)
So...What is the common denominator in all of these three lovely ladies' style? Well, besides all being blondes (total coincidence), I think they all stick to super classic styles and only wear the "trends" that actually suit them. I have decided that I cannot pull off most trends, and that's why I love classic, timeless lady-like looks.
In the end, I found a lot of really cute new pieces for my wardrobe and I stuck to colors and prints. I'm ready to suit up for work! Now if I can just keep the spit-up off my new things. :)
